Who says you need rear-wheel driven cars to have fun? Here's a list of front-wheel driven cars that are sizzling hot and highly entertaining on the road.

29 Jul 2022

Most of us enthusiasts love the idea of driving a rear-wheel driven (RWD) car, since it's easier to drift, naturally tail happy and, as a result, you can have ample fun in one. But does that mean that front-wheel drive (FWD) cars are boring and unsatisfactory to pilot?

Here, we've compiled a sacred list of sizzling hot FWD cars that won't just break that very perception, but are also highly regarded and entertaining on the road.

1. Ford Focus ST

The Ford Focus ST is a fast and fun hot hatch
The Ford Focus ST that you see here loses its predecessor's turbocharged five-pot powerplant in place of a new Ecoboost four-pot turbo that offers both more horses and torque. As a result, the car has a better fuel economy that doesn't compromise on performance and fun.

Total output of the Focus ST is rated at 250bhp and 345Nm of torque, and yes these figures are sent straight to the front wheels, allowing the hot hatch to hit the 100km/h mark from nought in just 6.5 seconds. Combine this explosive potent power with the car's chuckable driving dynamics, accurate steering and taut chassis, and what you have is a desirable hot hatch that's high on fun.

2. Honda Civic Type R

The Honda Civic Type R remains to be the Japanese choice when it comes to FWD car
The Honda Civic Type R has always been the iconic Japanese go-to when it comes to FWD cars. Over the different generations, this car has matured and has also become more powerful. And with the latest FK8 generation, the Type R has also managed to strike a good balance of power and comfort.

The 2.0-litre powerplant pumps out some 315 Samurai horses and 400Nm of torque to the front wheels, allowing it to smash the century sprint in just 5.8 seconds. More relevantly, the Type R is a fun-to-drive daily driver that won't be losing out on any time attack competitions on the race track.

3. Hyundai i30 N

The Hyundai i30 N is an understated hot hatch
An understated hot hatch, the Hyundai i30 N has, unfortunately, been neglected in Singapore due to the price tag and the badge. Truth be told, it's a mighty capable hot hatch that's high on fun. Mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, the hardy 2.0-litre powerplant pumps out 247bhp and 353Nm of torque to the front corners. Opt for the Performance Pack and the power figure increases significantly to 271bhp.

Still, power aside, the i30 N is an enormously entertaining driver's car because it manages to be very usable on a daily basis, and yet be meaty enough to head to the track for a couple of neck-breaking laps. Best part of all, there's an option to rev match your shifts, which means less power loss and a smoother transition whenever a downshift is required. And, mind you, it's a very accurate system that keeps you constantly engaged with the car.

4. MINI JCW 3-Door

It's mighty quick and high in fun, this MINI JCW
Another sizzling FWD hot hatch that's fun to pound on the straights and chuck around bends is the MINI JCW 3-Door. Thanks to its compact dimensions (compared to its peers), the MINI is right at home around twisties, where every turn is attacked with aplomb and accuracy.

The 2.0-litre unit sends 228bhp and 320Nm of torque to the front wheels via a lightning-quick eight-speed automatic transmission, which makes this hot hatch a straight-line wonder, too. Nought to hundred is completed in 6.1 seconds, a timing that's faster than most of its peers.

5. Renault Megane RS

The Renault Megane RS is fast, furious and fun
Who says the French aren't competent enough to make cars that are fast, furious and fun? The Renault Megane RS may come with a slightly smaller engine and fitted with only two pedals now (it was previously a 2.0-litre manual), but it's such an engaging and dynamically sound hatchback that it's hard to ignore.

The 1.8-litre turbocharged powerplant churns out high output figures - 296bhp and 420Nm of twisting force to be precise - which allows the hot hatch to cross the 100km/h line in just 5.7 seconds. But it's not how fast the car does it that impresses. Instead, it's the way the car does it that can really take your breath away. Like I said, who says the French aren't competent enough to make cars that are fast, furious and fun?

6. Skoda Octavia RS

The Skoda Octavia RS has the best of power and fun all packed into a very handsome car
Known to be one of the most bang-for-buck cars in its class, the Skoda Octavia RS combines power and fun into a very cleverly packaged car. Not only is the car fast (it completes the century sprint in just 6.7 seconds), it has all the ingredients necessary to make it an entertaining driver.

The latest generation Octavia RS, for instance, comes with Dynamic Chassis Control that gives the car a greater breadth of character when it comes to stiffness or suppleness. Plus, while steering could do with more feedback, it is accurate and sharp, which helps plenty when it comes to tackling corner after corner.

7. Volkswagen Golf GTI

The Volkswagen Golf GTI, even after eight generations, still remains to be a hot favourite
Arguably the quintessential hot hatch and an icon, the Volkswagen Golf GTI is said to be one of the best FWD cars of all time (I will still prefer the Civic Type R) and the standard bearer for hot hatchbacks. Thanks to its 2.0-litre powerplant, the front wheels get 241bhp and 370Nm of torque via a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, allowing the car to get to the 100km/h mark in just 6.4 seconds.

More impressively, the iconic hot hatch can dish out whatever you ask of it, whenever you ask of it. And it achieves all of your requests with alacrity and style and a level of maturity that you're often left wondering if you'll ever need another car in this lifetime.
