Chevrolet Colorado 2.8 Diesel Turbo (A) Review

The typical truck driver wishes he was doing something else more interesting at another place. They spit and piss on other people's lives and probably on their own too. They create most of the other bad elements possibly imaginable because of their attitude and character traits.
The badass ones are rude to people, police officers, friends and perhaps even their own families. They are judgmental and they think the world owes them something and their primary concern in life is themselves. You've seen your fair share of them, I'm sure of that. I've seen mine.
But here's the deal - trucking did not create these people. Bad trucks, maybe. But definitely not trucking.
This brings me to the Chevrolet Colorado. Reviews of this second generation Colorado you see here have been, unfortunately, lukewarm at best. Shown at the 2011 Bangkok Motor Show (the Thais love their tom yum and trucks), the Chevy has shown significant improvement over its predecessor, making it appealing to buyers in markets like Thailand where truck lovers are abundance.
Exterior
The truck's modern but tough look does help the Colorado to stand out amongst its competitors like the Hilux and Navara, all thanks to the design surgeons who have executed a slightly different approach regarding the Colorado's appearance.
The second generation Colorado you see here sports a new look, with a large dual-port grille and swollen fenders, resembling the rest of its siblings in Chevrolet's current lineup.

It looks like a strong replacement based on its appearance alone. It's sharper, bolder and certainly more aggressive - all in line to portray its aggressive truck intentions while giving it a stronger presence on the road.
Measuring at 5367mm x 1810mm x 1700mm (L x W x H), the regular cab (or better known as single cab) truck is relatively sizeable and is one of those vehicles that's more imposing, but with the right amount of intimidation and character that will get just about the sufficient stares from other road users.

Interior
On the inside, though, the Colorado falls short alongside Nissan and Toyota. Although the Colorado looks handsome from the outside, sharing chiselled cues with the Captiva and even the Orlando, the cabin seems like it's stuck in time. While rivals have become more refined, the Colorado continues with mediocre cabin furnishings.
On the plus side, the solid plastics in the cabin do exude an impression that it will easily last for a good ten to fifteen years without giving way. It being extremely secure and vault-like helps in this respect too. Buyers in the market for a basic, no-frills utility vehicle will easily find that the Chevy suits their needs. It's certainly a decent truck, with simple and easy to use factory-fitted audio system and features.
Another good thing about the Colorado is its effective and highly functional layout. Controls and buttons are all within reach of the driver and there are adequate storage and cubby holes without compromising on space for the occupants on board.

The Drive
Powered by a persuasive 2.8-litre Diesel Turbo powerplant that's mated to a five-speed manual transmission gearbox, the Colorado has a rather impressive behaviour on the road, especially when the push comes in at the higher end of the rev range. Despite its disposition as a truck, the single cab Chevy proves to be just as drivable in the real world.
With a maximum output of 180 horse and a whopping 440Nm of torque, there is plenty of overtaking punch on tap, making this gutsy truck a suitable highway tool. Around town, when a more composed and cultured behaviour is encouraged, the Colorado rides better than most trucks, soaking up bumps and dips without having you to feel tiresome over longer distances. Only over badly broken tarmac will you be able to experience abrupt vibrations.

Perhaps the only complain we have is the poor sound insulation. When travelling at high speeds on empty stretches of roads, the industrial-sounding clatter can be a tad overwhelming, with blasting the radio being the only solution. Still, it's an element that's to be expected, considering that the Colorado's mission is to serve pickup users and perhaps even heavy haulers.
Conclusion
With current car prices, the Chevrolet Colorado is a rather affordable vehicle that can fulfil the needs of workers who are willing to get their hands dirty on the job. But for 4x4 junkies, perhaps the Colorado isn't ready for you yet.
