Here are some of the cars I'll be proud to be seen driving in

After selling his car, Julian has troubles finding a replacement that can fill his aching heart. But there are several cars he wouldn't mind being seen in.
There are cars and then there are cars.

Yes, you read this correctly. If you understood it the first time you read it, then you're on the correct side of the fence. But if you don't, carry on reading anyway because I've been thinking too much and I've been thinking too long about my next possible car. Fortunately, this story is the only thing right now that can help me ease my troubled mind as I fantasise about having an endless pit of money to get the following cars - of which I hope they can serve you well.

1. Mercedes-Benz X-Class

The Mercedes-Benz X-Class is a stylish pickup
Yes, it may just be a pickup, but it's a stylish pickup that comes with a premium badge, an excellent styling, and various choices of engines - X220d, X250d and X350d.

The top model X350d 4MATIC delivers 258bhp and a maximum torque of 550Nm from the V6 powerplant, allowing it to sprint from 0 to 100km/h in just 7.9 seconds. Needless to say, the permanent all-wheel drive system in the pickup also caters to drivers who enjoy the occasional off-road expeditions without compromising on on-road stability and long-distance touring.

Best of all, it's a pickup you wouldn't be ashamed to be seen in.

2. Toyota Hilux Invincible X

The Hilux is an unabashedly indestructible pickup
Another pickup you wouldn't mind being seen in is the Toyota Hilux Invincible X. I mean, even the name of the model sounds... marvelously cool. While the biggest problem with pickups/commercial vehicles in Singapore is the fact that you must avoid driving on the first lane, you get to look cool while doing so on the second and third lanes on the expressways.

Loaded with a 2.8-litre in-line four diesel powerplant that's mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox, the Toyota Hilux produces some 204bhp and 420Nm if torque, which is more than enough to get you from point to point on our local roads.

And with petrol prices on the rise, driving a diesel-powered vehicle might just be the nifty trick you need up your sleeve to save at the pumps.

3. Land Rover Defender 90

It's an icon. Period.
Speaking of commercial vehicles, the list of cars to be seen in will not be complete without the Land Rover Defender. Oh, and it must be the 90. The boxy yet iconic styling makes the Defender 90 such a cult off-roader that's hard to miss on the road. And just like the X-Class and the Hilux, this Landie is also diesel-powered, which means it should save you a fair bit at the pumps.

Mated to a six-speed manual transmission, the go-anywhere, do-anything off-roader has a 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine that sends 122bhp and 360Nm of torque to all four corners. It won't win you races, this car, but it'll win plenty of hearts.

Fortunately, there are still several of these on sale in Singapore, so you can get your hands on one if the depth of your pockets allow.

4. Toyota Century

There are cars and there is the Toyota Century
If money wasn't a problem, this would be it. Fitted with a 5.0-litre V8 hybrid powerplant, Toyota's third generation flagship sedan is capable of producing a combined output of over 400bhp via its eCVT gearbox.

However, more than just power, it's about presence. The Century is a highly desirable and rare four-door limousine that I'll gladly take over, say, a Roller. It's a car that speaks volumes about the owner. Yes, money cannot buy you taste, but it sure as hell can buy you a Toyota Century. That alone will be and, should be, a conversation starter.

Like I said, there are cars and there are cars.

5. Porsche 911 R

The Porsche 911 R is a highly desirable machine
This is a 3.8-second car that has no turbos, comes with six pots and three pedals at the footwell. It's not just a 911, but a 911 R, which means you get the same 4.0-litre naturally aspirated engine as the GT3 RS. So, it generates a mind-boggling 493bhp and 460Nm of torque. And mind you these come into action at over 8,000rpm and 6,000rpm respectively.

Fortunately, we get to talk about this car briefly since we're imagining an endless pit of money. Unfortunately, it's almost impossible to get your hands on this car even if you genuinely have an endless pit of money. Almost is the keyword here, which means if luck is on your side, you could well be a proud owner of one.

Like my dad always said, if you want something, go work for it. If not, keep praying for it to happen.

6. Nissan GT-R R33

No one would be ashamed to be seen in this
Arguably, naysayers will lament that the R34 is still the nicer-looking GT-R ever produced, but I beg to differ. In my eyes, the R33 remains to be the nicest-looking of the lot.

Succeeding the R32, this car was released back in 1995 and lasted a good three-year run before the R34 started its production at the start of 1999. It then had a 2.6-litre straight six twin-turbo engine that was mated to a five-speed manual - both of which were similar to the R32.

Power output was rated at about 280bhp, which was quite a feat back in the 90s.

These are just some of the many cars our Editor has selected, and if you want to find out more about other cars that you can be proud to be seen it, check out our used car listings now!

Julian is a lot shorter than you think, but he has a big heart for cars. That sort of makes up for what he lacks.
