sgCarMart's Car of the Year 2009
15 Dec 2009|12,124 views
Major companies have had their whole operations turned upside down and dissected, with them putting their smaller brands up for sale. Brands like HUMMER and Volvo were lucky in securing a home relatively quickly, while the likes of Saab have been tossed about in a game of ping pong that looks set to carry well into the new year.
But with that, it was also a year of many exciting launches. So what better way to recap and to hear your opinions about them than in a poll!
This is SgCarMart’s first attempt at organising a Car of the Year competition. And with us moving towards a more interactive position with our readers, we’ve gone and started a poll thread on MyCarForum for the seven different categories below.
There will be no influence whatsoever on the results from the editorial team here so the results that will be publicised at year end will accurately reflect the opinions and choices of the very people who visit the blog and website.
I shan’t keep you from the task at hand any longer, but I’ll like to thank each and every one of you for your support throughout this year. Whether it was through comments on how insightful an article was, or the mistakes made, or even reading the articles, we appreciate every bit of support from you guys.
Here’s to having a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Best Economical Car of the Year
This section sees the all time favourite Honda Jazz, an all rounder in terms of space, comfort, versatility and economy. Contenders for this section include the latest Volkswagen Polo that is priced well within the Jazz’s range. The Renault Clio finds itself up against stiff competition from the Jazz and Polo. It all comes down to your vote for the Best Economical Car of the Year. But the Polo looks determined to end the Jazz’s winning streak.

Best Coupe/Cabriolet of the Year
Probably the most debated segment this year, the Coupe/Cabriolet takes into account the most realistically desirable machines introduced into our market this year. Starting off with Audi’s baby Cabriolet, up against the likes of the dedicated two-seater BMW Z4 with its powerful (base) 204 bhp engine and the luxurious Lexus IS-C. We’ll expect Volkswagen’s Scirocco to take the crown this year but could Kia cause a late upset with its attractive Koup?

Best Multi-Purpose Vehicle of the Year
This year saw the launch of the successor to Singapore’s best selling MPV. Borneo Motors made it a point to bring in the best selling MPV early this time to ensure Parallel Importers don’t enjoy the same boom sales they did with the first Toyota Wish. In the other corner stands another of Singapore’s favourite, the Honda Odyssey. Both MPV have a significant fan base and it’ll be interesting to see which one comes out tops this year.

Best Family Sedan of the Year
In a segment that’s bursting with entries, these four cars were chosen after much deliberation. The Kia Cerato surprised everyone with its sharp looks, affordability and quality. Riding on the successes of the previous Mazda 6, the latest generation aims to pick up where the last one left off. Winning new fans with its futuristic design. Chevrolet Cruze surprised everyone with its continental build quality and design which makes it a serious contender for the title. The Skoda Octavia surprised journalists at the launch with its great design, huge bootspace and rear seating capacity. Best of all, it’s all Volkswagen underneath.

Best Executive Sedan of the Year
The Mercedes-Benz E-Class needs little introduction. A favourite of every successful, contractor, businessman or hawker, the latest generation is already seen everywhere. The Skoda Superb based on the Passat B6 platform rounds up the contenders for this year’s Executive Sedan. Built with an innovative tailgate that doubles as a separate saloon boot, it’s sure to give the E-Class cause for concern.

Best Luxury Limousine of the Year
BMW’s brand new design language has seen the departure of the “bangle-butt” and instead, a more rounded and attractive direction that’s much more pleasing on the eye has taken precedence. The Bavarian company is up against the perennial favourite, the Mercedes-Benz S-class, with its LED updates in the front and rear. Thrown in for some good exotic measure, Maserati’s Quattroporte GTS surely isn’t a volume seller but there have been enough units on the roads to know that people love their limo’s fast.

Best Performance Car of the Year
This is a hard one. To round of the 2009 automotive year, voting for the performance car of the year will leave a lot of you guys sitting on the fence. We’ve got the much loved Audi R8 in V10 trim, Nissan’s highly successful GTR (launched by the authorised dealer), the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4, the Ferrari California and last but not least, the Volkswagen GTI. The GTI sounds and looks absolutely out of place but after having a go in it a few months back, I’m convinced that its ability to provide periodic adrenaline rushes will make this a huge favourite.
After all winning Performance Car of the Year isn’t all about speed and horsepower, it’s also about how it makes you feel driving it.
