smove: Car Sharing in a Smarter Way

Owning a car has always been desirable, not only for the convenience, but also for the social status that it is often associated with. However, the high cost of ownership is a barrier for many aspiring motorists. Who is smove?

smove is a car sharing company with a strong focus on simplicity and customer service. Its in-house platform gives users easy access to a car whenever they need one. 

The firm started off with a fleet of full-electric vehicles (EVs). In order to overcome the limitations of EVs due to limited support infrastructure in Singapore, smove changed its fleet to the Toyota Prius C, a petrol-hybrid hatchback. The company now has a fleet of 16 Prius Cs, and is on track to expand the fleet to 100 by the end of the year.

How is smove different from other car rental firms?

smove offers one of the most flexible car sharing schemes in the market. For instance, it is the only rental firm that offers one-way trips, which means users need not return the car at the same pickup location. Users can also book a car for as short as 15 minutes. In order for better transparency, smove adopts a 'pay as you use' pricing model. The model is also fairer than other cost structures in the market, which are less flexible and charges users in 'blocks' where they have to pay for an entire day or a full weekend rental.

Compared to traditional car rental programs, smove does without the troublesome paperwork during the handling over the car. Replacing the car key is a smart keyless system, where users access the car using their own CEPAS (EZ-link or NETS Flashpay) card. 

In this way, users no longer need to fear losing the keys or being locked out of the car. In the event where the registered CEPAS card is misplaced or has expired, the user only needs to re-register a new CEPAS card by updating their profile on their account online.
To access the rental car, users simply have to 'tap in' with their registered CEPAS card. 

Drivers can register to be a smove user via a fuss-free enrolment process on its website. Upon successful registration, users can log in and start booking for a car. The rental rates stated on the website include insurance and fuel. Hence, users only need to take care of ERP and parking fees. 

A one-time registration fee of $19 is only chargeable upon your first booking. Users can pick up and return the car at any of the 25 preset locations, which are conveniently situated in shopping malls, offices and HDB estates. These locations are easily accessible via public transport, such as nearby MRT stations and bus stops. It also offers to door-to-door delivery and collection service in its area.
