A Mercedes-Benz W196 R Stromlinienwagen has net the record for the most valuable Grand Prix racing car ever sold and is now the second most valuable car ever sold at auction.
The car in question fell under the hammer at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart in the same room that saw the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR 'Uhlenhaut Coupe' being sold in 2022 for €135,000,000 that made the 300 SLR the most valuable car ever sold at auction.
The Mercedes-Benz W196 R Stromlinienwagen was initially donated to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum in 1965 by the then Daimler-Benz AG and realised a total of €51,155,000 in the single car auction hosted by RM Sotheby's. The car is said to have attracted a heated bidding battle.
The W196 R was developed to meet the new regulations for engines with up to 2.5 litres of displacement, introduced in 1954, and it soon proved to be the car to beat in the hands of legends including Juan Manuel Fangio and Stirling Moss.
