The launch of the 6-Series coupe comes after the 6-Series convertible was unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show earlier this year, and is based on the Concept 6-Series Coupe that was showcased last year, and designed by new BMW design boss Adrian van Hooydonk.
The design is a mild evolution of the previous 6-Series, with its "shark nose" front-end with bi-xenon headlights and a forward-slanting grille, and the side profile showcasing frameless windows, chrome accents, and a C-pillar with the distinctive Hofmeister kink. The rear of the car features a dual exhaust system, LED taillights, and a boot lid with an integrated spoiler.
The interior of the 6-Series coupe is the same as the convertible, with equipment such as Dakota leather seats, high-gloss black trim, or brushed aluminium and wood trim, and a 7-inch iDrive display all available. Options include heated/ventilated seats, a panoramic sunroof, a Bang & Olufsen audio system, and GPS navigation with an upgraded 10.2-inch display. Technological features include a head-up display, a rear-view camera, night vision assist with pedestrian recognition, parking assist, and a lane departure/lane change warning system.
The new 6-Series measures in at4,894mm long, 1894mm wide and 1,369mm tall, which is 75mm longer, 39mm wider and 5mm lower, than its predecessor. The wheelbase has also increased by 75mm to 2855mm for improved rear passenger space. Boot capacity of the new 6-Series stands at 460 litres.
Two engines will be available for the 6-Series coupe at launch. The first is a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six cylinder engine that will be transplanted into the 640i, while the second is a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 that will be used in the 650i. Both engines will send the power to the rear wheels via a standard eight-speed Sports automatic gearbox with steering wheel shift paddles, while a six-speed manual gearbox is also available as an option for the 650i.
The 640i's engine produces 320bhp and 450Nm of torque, allowing the car to go from 0-100km/h in 5.4 seconds, and reach its electronically-limited top speed of 205km/h. The 650i's V8 unit meanwhile produces 407bhp and 600Nm of torque, giving it a 0-100km/h sprint time of 4.9 seconds, and the same electronically-limited top speed of 250km/h.
