The impact of the accident caused all but two of the nine occupants in the lorry to fling out of the vehicle. Of the nine occupants in the lorry, two workers of Indian origin were trapped in the vehicle while the other seven were flung out - including one in and two at the edge of a canal. The other four ended up on the road.
The Straits Times reported at least four have sustained serious injuries and perhaps multiple fractures.
The lorry was ferrying seven Indian and Chinese national workers to work, when the incident occurred along the Pan Island Expressway (PIE) towards Tuas, at 7:45am near the Jurong East Ave 1 exit. The 20-odd-year old BMW driver, who is believed to have been drink driving, hit the lorry from the back.
The workers told the Chinese Evening Daily they saw the car coming in fast towards them, but had little time to escape. The lorry allegedly spun twice before toppling to its side while the car only stopped after hitting the road divider.
A spokesperson from the Singapore Civil Defence (SCDF) cited five of the casualties were conveyed to Alexandra Hospital, while the other four were taken to the National University Hospital.
The car driver was unhurt and police investigations are ongoing.
