Is the 520-litre boot of the BMW 5 Series Sedan just not enough?
You don't have to go shopping for an oversized SUV just yet. BMW has revealed a new 5 Series Touring, and it's quite the looker.
The estate measures in at 5,060mm long, 1,900mm wide, and 1,515mm tall (exactly the same dimensions as the sedan) but offers a total of 570 litres of boot space, which can be expanded to 1,700 litres if you fold the rear seats down.
And you won't be weighed down if you utilise all that added space either. Offered at launch are two all-electric drivetrains, starting from the i5 eDrive40 Touring, which gets a total output of 308bhp and peak torque of 430Nm (with launch control activated). This variant will sprint to 100km/h from a standstill in 6.1 seconds and delivers a WLTP range of 560km.
But for those that need to get themselves and their luggage somewhere in urgent fashion, the i5 M60 xDrive Touring is also available. This all-electric variant puts a total of 510bhp and 820Nm of torque (once again, with launch control activated) to all four wheels, allowing the car to complete the century sprint in just 3.9 seconds. This variant posts a WLTP range of 506km.
All-electric options start with the 380bhp i5 eDrive40 (pictured left), while the 295bhp 530e plug-in hybrid (pictured right) is also being offered at launch
Both these models make use of an 81.2kWh battery, which can be charged at a maximum rate of 205kW via a direct current charger.
A plug-in hybrid option will also be offered starting later in 2024 for the 5 Series Touring. The BMW 530e Touring puts out a system total of 295bhp alongside a peak torque of 450Nm thanks to its 2.0-litre engine paired to a 181bhp electric motor. Combustion-only options, meanwhile, currently only include the 194bhp 520d Touring (available optionally with xDrive all-wheel drive), although BMW does state that a six-cylinder diesel option will also be offered later in 2024.
Further aiding those quick deliveries is the estate's 50:50 weight distribution, and all BMW i5 Touring and the plug-in hybrid models will also feature rear-axle air suspension including automatic self-levelling.
But of course, customers may also opt to have their cars equipped with the M Sport Suspension, an M sport braking system, and BMW's Adaptive Chassis Professional (standard in the i5 M60 xDrive Touring) with electronically controlled shock absorbers, should they wish to raise the handling prowess of their vehicle further still.
And navigating to new locations should prove easy in the 5 Series Touring as well.
The car comes equipped with an enhanced BMW iDrive display which merges a 12.3-inch Information Display and a 14.9-inch Control Display that both run on BMW's Operating System 8.5. The new system comes with a redesigned home screen and a 'QuickSelect' quick access function. Also present here as standard are new sports seats, although the BMW Interaction Bar, a panoramic glass roof and an 18-speaker Bowers and Wilkins surround sound system are all offered as optional items.
All model variants of the BMW 5 Series Touring will be built at the BMW Plant Dingolfing, and the car is expected to launch in Europe in May 2024, with other markets to follow from June 2024.
