BYD, the world's largest EV maker, is expanding its brand presence in Singapore not just by selling more cars, but also through 'lifestyle' initiatives.
The opening of BYD by 1826 today (13 Jun) is the first of many such initiatives. Located at 33 Boat Quay, BYD by 1826 is a restaurant that aims to 'merge the world of electric vehicles and hospitality'.
To bring the concept to life, BYD and Vantage Automotive partnered with EightX Group, an omnichannel lifestyle hospitality group with a focus on sustainability. EightX operates several lifestyle hubs in Singapore.
The restaurant's opening marked the first time that BYD has undertaken such a collaboration. The brand will study whether the same concept can be replicated throughout the region and perhaps even in China, its home market.
BYD by 1826 features menu items named after the brand's electric models, such as 'Atto 3 Hokkaido Scallops' and 'Han Dynasty Ocean Dumpling'. The Atto 3 is BYD's most popular model here, while the Han is one of its luxury sedans.
One of the concept's goals is to enable diners who are unfamiliar with the brand to learn more about it, but in a more relaxed setting compared to that of a car showroom.
Should they wish to discover more, restaurant staff will be able to help. According to a Vantage Automotive spokesperson, the EightX employees there are specially trained to answer queries about the cars.
A test drive of the BYD Atto 3, accompanied by a salesperson, is also possible. Customers will need to walk over to 6 Battery Road for this.
During the event, BYD, Vantage Automotive and EightX also announced that they were readying their second automotive lifestyle outlet in Suntec City. Currently being renovated, it will also have an F&B element to it but differ from BYD by 1826.
The three firms also said that they were planning to open more outlets in the future, and that these would offer a variety of activities in addition to dining.
