The Malibu will be built in several different plants around the world in order to extend its global reach, and GM has confirmed that the Malibu will be produced in Korea. The car will be sold as a Chevrolet in Korea, after GM dropped the Daewoo nameplate there earlier this year.As such, South Korea will also be the first country to have the Malibu on sale, when the car goes into production at GM’s plant in Bupyeong, Korea later this year. Other factories that will produce the Malibu include Jingjiao, China, which will start building the car at the end of 2011, and Fairfax, Kansas and Detroit-Hamtramck, in the U.S., starting from early 2012.
“Adding Korea as a key sales market for the new Malibu further increases the brand’s global presence and continues our growth path while increasing our car offerings to consumers in Korea,” said Russ Clark, Chevrolet Product Director.
The new Malibu premiered at the Shanghai and New York Motor Shows last week, and Chevrolet has confirmed that the car will be sold in 100 different countries in six continents, with engine choices varying between regions. North America will receive a 2.5-litre four-cylinder plant with 190bhp and a 2.4-liter ECO unit with the eAssist system delivering 180bhp. China is expected to get 2.0-litre and 2.4-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder units, and a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine, while Europe will most likely have a choice of diesel engines.
