23-year old, Jamal Haneef Kader Sultan, the sole survivor of a horrific car accident, told a coroner during an inquiry, the driver had consumed as much as 10 plastic cups of alcohol before taking the wheel of his Honda Civic. A resulting accident caused the life of two of his friends, and his own.
According to investigation officer, Senior Staff Sergeant Jimmy Chan, the 24-year old driver, Rammohan Subash Nair, mounted a kerb on a sloped left bender and lost control of his vehicle just after Jalan Kelulut. The car flipped in mid-air and hit several objects - from a pedestrian crossing to a tree - before coming to a rest.
Additionally, The Straits Times reported that the two rear passengers, 22-year old, Shankar Tharumalingam, and 23-year old, Harendran Banjatjaram, who were not buckled up, were thrown out of the rear windscreen of the car when the accident occurred in the early hours of the 2nd of March, along Yio Chu Kang Road.
Although Rammohan was extracted from the wreck and was arrested for suspected drink driving, he died the next day at Tan Tock Seng Hospital without regaining consciousness.
The local paper reported that Jamal met his friends at a void deck in Serangoon North Avenue 4, the night before the accident, where his friends were already drinking. More alcohol was bought from Sengkang, and the group returned to the spot to drink.
Jamal told the court he requested Rammohan to stop drinking as he was driving later, but the latter would not listen, and assured his friends he was "ok" to drive. Later, Jamal felt Rammohan's driving was unstable, as he almost hit a kerb while trying to exit the carpark at Serangoon North Avenue 4.
Jamal, who was seating at the front was wearing his seat belt and ducked and covered his head when he realised the car was about to crash. His passenger airbags were also inflated. The car was travelling at over 95km/h and had partially punctured tyres - with a nail found on the front left and rear right tyres.
State Coroner, Imran Abdul Hamid, will report his findings pertaining to the accident on the 18th of September.
