The new points system will award race winners with 25 points, runners up with 20 points, and third placed finishers with 15 points. Fourth to tenth placed finishers will receive points in a 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 manner.
The change is the first revision to the points system since 2003, when second placed finishers were awarded 8 points instead of 6, and seventh and eighth placed drivers also received points. Other changes announced at the World Motor Sport Council Meeting were the confirmation of the inaugural Korean Grand Prix in October 2010, and the announcement of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix as the final race of the 2010 season.
