Battery-swapping technology is finally taking off here in Singapore, but it will first make its way into our two-wheeled vehicles.
The move comes as a result of a partnership between Gogoro Inc., Cycle & Carriage Singapore (C&C), as well as food delivery platform foodpanda.
The depleted battery of the Gogoro 2 Series Smartscooter can be swapped out for a fresh one in just seconds This partnership will see a battery swapping pilot launched to support last mile deliveries here in Singapore. These deliveries will be conducted via Gogoro 2 Series Smartscooters, which will be leased to foodpanda's delivery riders via C&C.
The Gogoro 2 Series, which has an estimated range of 100km, is said to come with features that deliver a smoother and more premium urban riding experience. These include a hyper-efficient, water-cooled motor that allows it to reach a maximum speed of 90km/h, as well as the use of a carbon belt for near silent riding and minimal maintenance.
And once the battery of the Gogoro 2 Series needs recharging, the foodpanda riders can simply head to C&C's Service Centres at Alexandra or Ubi to swap out their depleted batteries for new ones in at the battery swapping stations. Swapping out the batteries is said to take mere seconds, minimising downtime and potential earnings losses for deliver riders.
The leasing package from C&C will cover servicing of the smartscooters and is said to be comparable in cost to an internal combustion motorcycle The C&C leasing package for riders also includes battery swapping services, as well as service and maintenance costs, making operating costs comparable to motorcycles with internal combustion engines, while insulating riders from the unpredictability of petrol prices.
C&C states that it is looking forward to the commercialisation of Gogoro electric two-wheelers upon successful completion of the pilot, and is seeking like-minded partners to scale up the Gogoro fleet and battery swapping stations in Singapore and beyond.
