Four million Volvos have been built on the SPA platform

Volvo is celebrating more than four million cars produced on its Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform, with the milestone four-millionth car being the latest Volvo XC90, which rolled off the brand's production plant in Sweden back in October.
Debuting on the original second-generation XC90 all the way back in 2014, the SPA platform has since gone on to underpin other important models for the firm, including its flagship S90 sedan as well as its all-time bestseller, the XC60.
The SPA platform underpins many of Volvo's most important models of its current lineup, including its bestselling XC60 SUV and S60 sedan
Arguably one of the most luminous qualities of the platform is its safety focus; it helped to introduce a number of world-first safety features including the likes of a run-off road protection package and an auto brake function at intersections, and also boasted a 'safety cage'.
On the packaging front, it also enabled the brand to pursue a 'Twin Engine' powertrain philosophy - Volvo-speak for the combination of combustion and electric power used in its ever-growing plug-in hybrid lineup.
But even from a design perspective, the SPA platform marked a turning point for Volvo as it unlocked new possibilities for its design team - and ultimately gave form to the firm's now-signature 'Thor's Hammer' running lights.
Volvo has been eager to highlight the fact that the SPA platform continues to stand as a "proudly Swedish-led R&D effort", having been designed and developed entirely in-house in Sweden.
The brand states that insights gleaned from the SPA platform are still being carried forward into the SPA2 and SPA3 platforms, the latter of which will underpin the upcoming EX60.
