Following LTA's lead, the Housing and Development Board (HDB) will install CCTV cameras to curb illegal parking. According to The Straits Times, the cameras will be installed in 55 areas beginning the second quarter this year. Locations include service roads and loading bays around HDB carparks in Bedok, Toa Payoh and Sengkang.
Motorists who are caught are liable to pay a fine ranging from $25 to $200 - depending on vehicle type. The cameras will only be installed as a deterrent where necessary.
HDB's decision to install the cameras comes after a successful trial project in Bukit Panjang - at the service road near Block 163A Gangsa Road in 2009. HDB cites the number of illegally parking offences at that block dropped by at least 70 percent after the installation of the CCTV cameras.
