After exiting the sport in 2008 due to the global economic crisis, the Japanese automotive firm, Honda, has announced its return to Formula One from 2015 - primarily as an engine supplier - starting with McLaren. With less than two years to their re-entry, it seems plans for its return are in full speed. Honda has recently announced its European racing operations will be based in Milton Keynes, U.K. - which also happens to be the base of Austrian-Japanese Infiniti Red Bull Racing.
The Japanese manufacturer will supply the Woking based McLaren team with 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 engines on top of energy recovery systems. Despite the European base, the development and manufacture of Honda's Formula One power units will take place at their research and development centre in Tochigi, Japan.
Honda plans to begin operations in the middle of next year. The facility is currently utilised by Honda associates Mugen and will serve as an ideal location for their trackside support operations, as well as the rebuilding and maintenance of power units.
Yasuhisa Arai, Honda's Chief Officer of motorsports, said, "With the confirmation of a new F1 operation base in U.K., our preparation to join F1 has become more specific and concrete. To meet and exceed the expectations of our fans, we will accelerate our development to bring back the unique Honda engine sound onto the track."
