At its 'N Day 2024' event on 25 October 2024, Hyundai's high performance N division unveiled the RN24, heralded as the next generation 'Rolling Lab' and showcasing N's vision for the near future.
The annual event highlights N's three pillars: Corner Rascal, Racetrack Capability, and Everyday Sportscar, reflecting the brand's commitment to creating engaging driving experiences made possible with EV technology.
Fuelled by the desire to merge the most powerful EV powertrain in the smallest possible package, N combined the IONIQ 5 N's 641bhp dual-motor power electronics (PE) system with a World Rally Championship-inspired EV chassis, while a revamped battery pack keeps the original 84kWh capacity and allows for a shorter wheelbase.
Equipped with the WRC Powertrain Drive Control Logic system, this allows drivers to adjust various functions using steering wheel buttons. In addition, modifications to the IONIQ 5 N's system used in the RN24 ensure battery and motor cooling performance, with a steering setup delivering a rally car-level response that promises extra agility.
The car's 'Rally Mode' motor torque control, similar to that of the i20 N Rally 1, helps improve distribution of torque to all four wheels, improving the system's complexity and cost.
Sporting a rigid exoskeleton-style exposed roll cage inspired by WRC concepts, this ensures occupant safety and improves overall performance during high-speed manoeuvres.
In addition, the RN24 is fitted with a spoiler from Hyundai's Touring Car Racing models, which enhances aerodynamic performance and improves agility and stability, with 3D-printed gussets for better rigidity and weight reduction.
As mentioned by Joon Park, Vice President of N Brand Management Group, the car exemplifies N's commitment to "advancing electric motorsport technology by prioritising the driving experience rather than spec numbers."
