As anticipation grows for the eighth-generation BMW 5 Series, BMW has provided exciting new information about what customers can look forward to in the model.
The headline all along, of course, is that the model range is set to include a fully electric variant for the first time, named the i5. As per what we've already seen with the i4 and i7, BMW's flexible powertrain architecture means that it will be built atop of the same platform and look largely similar to the other variants in the lineup. These will include those powered by petrol and diesel engines with 48V mild-hybrid technology, and plug-in hybrids.
Following the success of the i4 M50, BMW has also confirmed that a Performance sedan model from BMW M will also be included in the lineup.
What should delight wagon fans, however, is the revelation that an i5 Touring will also join the family sometime later - between Q2 and Q3 2024. Noting that the Touring variant of the 5 Series has always had an enthusiastic customer base, BMW believes that the i5 Touring will offer a "truly unique selling point in this segment".
Dubbed "Operating System 8.5", a slightly enhanced version of the software already running on BMW’s latest models is expected to debut on the eighth-generation 5 Series too, while introducing innovating digital services.
Called the i5, an electric variant of the 5 Series Touring will also be revealed in 2024 (Pictured: Current 5 Series Touring) Additionally, BMW has promised that the model range will be "more dynamic and more comfortable than ever", and apparent put a fresh spin on the its "signature elegantly sporting design".
Set to be built exclusively at Dingolfing (which is also home to the iX and 7 Series/i7, among other models), the all new 5 Series Sedan will be launched globally in October 2023 - more than fifty years after the first generation hit the market in 1972. The model range has seen more than 10 million units sold in the time, making it one of BMW's most successful names.
