A new generation of researchers, technicians and software engineers that will collectively be on the cutting edge of Electric Vehicle (EV) development - that appears to be the dream set in motion by a new partnership between Singapore Polytechnic (SP) and automotive distributor and retailer, Inchcape Singapore.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on 5 April 2022 will see both sides working together extensively over the next two years to co-design educational experiences and ultimately, groom local talents in the field of EV development. The collaboration also marks the first time ever that SP is working with a leading automotive distributor on its curricula.
Like Inchcape Singapore, SP has long been a proponent of EVs, and currently offers multiple courses related to the field, including 'Electric Vehicle 101' and 'Fundamentals of Electric Vehicles'.
The former will be attended by at least 550 Inchcape Singapore staff by 2023, although the course will also be open to interested members of the public. In order to deepen knowledge of the field, plans are in the pipeline to introduce progressive programmes of intermediate and advanced levels.
Toyota and Lexus are among leaders of the hybrid-car space in Singapore, and Inchcape Singapore, which oversees the two brands alongside Suzuki and Hino locally, will also donate batteries to SP under the partnership. These will be used as learning tools for students enrolling within the EV-related courses. The first donated battery - a lithium-ion pack from the hybrid Toyota Prius+ MPV - was on display at the event.
A lithium-ion battery pack from the Toyota Prius+ has already been donated to SP for use in its courses Both sides also reaffirmed their commitment to the Singapore Green Plan 2030, a government-led initiative to accelerate sustainable development on our shores across various industries.
Mr. Soh Wai Wah, Principal and CEO of SP, expressed his faith in sustainability education as a 'practical and significant step forward' for Singapore's future of mobility. Students and teaching staff across different courses at SP are currently also engaging in the development of autonomous vehicles across its different schools.
Meanwhile, Ms. Jasmmine Wong, CEO of Inchcape Greater China and Singapore, highlighted the urgency of generating interest among the younger generation in order to build a workforce ready to handle the EVs of tomorrow. Internships and opportunities through the SkillsFuture Career Transition Programme are set to be jointly introduced in 2023.
