Kia opens new Gwangmyeong EVO Plant

Kia has marked the opening of its new Gwangmyeong EVO Plant, its first dedicated EV manufacturing facility albeit rebuilt on one of Kia's existing plant sites.

Located at Kia Autoland Gwangmyeong, the new facility has an annual production capacity of 150,000 units and started production of the Kia EV3 in the first half of this year. This is to be followed by the production of a yet-to-be revealed EV4 in the first half of 2025.

Spanning a total of 60,000sqm, the new plant comes as part of Kia's aim to respond flexibly to changes in global demand for electric vehicles. The new site will serve as a new hub for the production of Kia's next generation vehicle production and houses a high-tech logistics factory equipped with automated guided forklifts as well as a paint shop that makes use of a water-based process instead of a more pollutive oil-based one.

Kia states that it intends to ramp up production of electric vehicles following the opening of this plant. It will additionally introduce the new EV4 mid-sized electric sedan come early 2025.
