Kia has fully unveiled its EV5 electric SUV at its first annual Kia EV Day.
The new all-electric SUV is based on the same E-GMP platform that underpins products including the Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6 and the Kia EV6, and is set to be built in China and Korea.
Three variants of the Kia EV5 are set to be offered in China, starting from the 'standard' model, which gets a 64kWh battery pack and a 215bhp electric motor. This variant is expected to deliver a driving range of 530km according to the Chinese Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC).
A 'long-range' model will also be offered, that utilises an 88kWh battery alongside the same 215bhp electric motor. This model will give a range of 720km per charge. A 'long-range AWD' model will also feature an 88kWh battery, but gets its 215bhp electric motor at the front axle paired with a 94bhp electric motor at the rear axle, allowing the car to deliver a total system output of 308bhp. Kia is targeting a driving range of 650km based on the CLTC testing standard for this variant.
A 'GT' variant is also set to join this lineup, said to offer more performance features and a yet more engaging driving experience, although more information will only be revealed by Kia for this variant at a later date.
In the cabin, the Kia EV5 gets a spacious cabin that utilises connected car Navigation Cockpit infotainment system. This infotainment system utilises a Panoramic Wide Display, which combines a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch infotainment system, along with a 5.0-inch climate control display. The system will also be able to receive over-the-air software updates.
A new Unified Graphical User Interface is said to be applied so the car's audio-visual, navigation, and telematics screens, so they all display available information in a consistent manner.
A choice of seats featuring eco-friendly recycled PET fabric and Bio-PU leather coverings will be offered with the Kia EV5. These will also be available with a four-mode massage function, which will allow passengers to truly relax while the vehicle is being charged.
Families will also be able to transform the rear of the vehicle into a bedroom thanks to the car's 0-degree, full-flat folding second-row camping seats. These pair with a food cooler/warmer in the rear console, which can be used to keep takeout breakfast warm during commutes, or to store ice-cold drinks during tips in warm weather. A Multi Table luggage board which can instantly be transformed into a table is also available within the Kia EV5.
