Mandatory give way to buses scheme will be extended to more stops from December
02 Nov 2012|6,248 views
Motorists should come to a complete stop before the give way line to give way to buses pulling out of the bays. Failure to do so will result in a $130 fine for each offence.
Work on the first batch of 15 stops in Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5, Petir Road and Yio Chu Kang Road is expected to be finished by the end of this year while extension works can continue till the middle of 2014. The extension will cover stops in 32 roads, including Clementi Road and Stevens Road.
The scheme started in December 2008 and can be identified with a large yellow box and a directional arrow after a give way line.
Every month this year, an estimated figure of 160 motorists have been caught for failure to give way to buses at stops where the scheme is in effect. Though still a high figure, the number of offenders is almost half compared to last year where about 300 motorists were found each month.
The 'Mandatory Give Way to Buses' scheme will be extended from December this year by more than 50 per cent to cover 353 stops from the current 203. The scheme aims to speed up bus journey times by allowing them to exit bus stops easier. During a trial phase the buses exited the bus bays 73 percent faster which resulted in a 7 percent improved total journey time.
