Mercedes-Benz launches all-new flagship EQS SUV in Singapore

Exactly one week after setting up its 'Crafted for the Future: The Mercedes-Benz Showcase' pop-up showcase in Raffles City, Mercedes-Benz has welcomed a new electric flagship to Singapore: The first ever, seven-seater EQS SUV. The car was unveiled to members of the media at the pop-up on 31 August 2023 during a private event.
Quite grandly, Mercedes-Benz has called the EQS SUV a groundbreaking and unique SUV "for pioneers" - and it's made sure the model has quite the list of bragging rights to match the claim too.
For starters, the car marks the firm's first electric-only, luxury seven-seater SUV. (The EQB, which has been on sale for a while now, is based on the platform of its combustion-powered twin.)
The EQS SUV is also the third EQ model - after the EQS and EQE sedans - to be based on the firm's modular architecture for large electric vehicles. Sharing a similar design DNA to those cars, its slippery body and other aerodynamic elements give the car an impressive drag coefficient of just 0.26Cd.
Despite having the same 3,125mm wheelbase as the EQS Sedan, the EQS SUV is undeniably the most imposing-looking of the trio thus far, since it's the widest and tallest. One surprising peculiarity, however, is the fact that it doesn't really tower over you despite being an SUV; it's just over 1.71m tall.
With the ability to ferry seven as one of its calling cards, the car also promises to be an oasis of space. Boot capacity already starts at 245 litres with all three rows up, then progresses towards a variable 565-800 litres in the five-seat configuration. Fold the second row down, and this expands to over 2000 litres.
Mercedes-Benz has launched the EQS SUV here in one powertrain variant: The EQS450 4MATIC. As its name suggests, this is a dual-motor, all-wheel drive setup that musters an impressive total of 355bhp and 800Nm of torque - enough to send the car's 2.8 tonne body from 0 to 100km/h in six seconds flat. It will go on to reach a top speed of 210km/h.
The EQS450 boasts a range of up to 610km thanks to its aerodynamic design and also its 107.8kWh battery, which supports DC charging at up to 200kW for a 10-80% recharge in just 31 minutes
At the same time, thanks to its aerodynamic efficiency and a large 107.8kWh battery, the EQS SUV is also quite the marathoner, boasting a WLTP-rated range of 610km. As Merc tells us, that means that the average Singaporean driver will only need to charge the car every other week.
The battery's ability to support DC charging at up to 200kW means it can potentially be recharged from 10 to 80% in just 31 minutes, too - impressive considering its size.
Although two trim lines are being offered with the EQS SUV, a wealth of equipment - as is befitting of a luxury flagship - will already come as standard.
In line with the car's hulking proportions, the 'entry-level' Electric Art trim already rides on 21-inch wheels, and announces its presence with a blacked out radiator grille imprinted with a Mercedes-Benz Star pattern.
Meanwhile, expect to be ensconced on the inside by expensive-feeling materials including open-pore ash wood surfaces, and soft, luxury seats with finely-crafted covers.
On the road, rear-wheel steering promises better manoeuvrability at lower speeds, and both better stability and agility at higher speeds. Merc's AIRMATIC air suspension also promises sublime ride comfort, while allowing the EQS SUV to be raised by up to 25mm. We're not sure you'd want to take this seven-seater luxe barge into the mud - but an OFFROAD mode does exist, alongside the four other drive modes, including ECO, COMFORT, SPORT and INDIVIDUAL.
Still, the AMG Line is what you want to step up to enjoy the very best that this luxury SUV has to offer.
While taking honours as the first luxury car in Singapore to offer Apple Music's Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos natively, the AMG Line trim of the EQS SUV also brings in the MBUX Hyperscreen
In this trim level, the EQS SUV takes honours as the first luxury car in Singapore to offer Apple Music's Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos natively. The vessel for this aural experience is a Burmester 3D surround sound system, consisting of 15 speakers with a whopping combined output of 710 watts. We managed to try the system out for ourselves, and the experience - even when seated in the third row - truly makes one feel as if they were in a cinema.
Additionally, the EQS SUV, in AMG Line trim, features the dazzling MBUX Hyperscreen that we first saw on the EQS Sedan. (The Electric Art gets a 12.8-inch central OLED touchscreen and 12.3-inch digital driver's display pairing instead.)
At over 141cm wide, the Hyperscreen actually integrates three separate screens - comprising a 12.3-inch driver's display, a 17.7-inch central display, and even a 12.3-inch screen for the front passenger - within what appears to be a single, uninterrupted instrument panel.
Mercedes-Benz says it wants to provide a worry-free experience for its customers throughout the ownership journey, and as such, is working with its authorised dealer, Cycle & Carriage, to provide a 10-year warranty (or up to 250,000km) to buyers of the EQS SUV.
Good news for those immediately keen to catch the EQS SUV up close - the car will be stationed at the pop-up showcase in Raffles City from 1 to 3 Sep 2023, where you'll also be able to check out the sustainability-focused installations. These are made of upcycled auto parts and among others, repurposed materials from the Mercedes-Benz Great World Concept Store, which was closed earlier in April.
