Mercedes electrifies the G-Class with the Concept EQG

The legendary G-Class has gone all-electric with the EQG Concept, unveiled at the IAA Munich International Motor Show 2021.
The near-production concept car adopts the G-Class' angular silhouette including its iconic elements.
At the front, the off-roader's iconic round head lights have been retained. However, in place of a radiator grille lies a solid Black Panel with an illuminated star in its middle. The panel plays a pattern of squircles in the familiar blue of the Mercedes-EQ models, and also sports an illumiated band around its exterior.
The concept has also been given a two-tone finish, with gloss black on top, gloss aluminium beam on the bottom, while illuminated stripes bring emphasis to the car's exterior protective strips.
Also noticeable from the flank are the 22-inch polished aluminium alloy wheels of the Concept EQG. While at the back, a lockable box has taken the place of the spare wheel cover, providing storage for a charging cable.
Another highlight of the exterior is the car's flat roof rack, which has been designed to form the shape of the letter 'G'. A white LED strip integrated into the front edge of the roof rack is a modern interpretation of the searchlight indispensable for demanding off-road adventures. Another LED strip in red finish forms the rear of the roof rack.
The Mercedes EQG is built upon a ladder frame chassis for off-road durability, as is typical of the G-Class. Its independent suspension on the front axle and a rigid axle at the rear have been newly developed to accommodate electric drive.
The EQG is powered by four electric motors close to the wheels, all individually controllable to allow the vehicle to offer unique driving characteristics both on and off-road. As with any real 4x4, the Concept EQG's off-road reduction can be activated via a shiftable two-speed gearbox in order to meet the high off-road ability expected of a G-Class.
