MINI debuts physical prototype of the Vision Urbanaut

In 2020, MINI revealed the MINI Vision Urbanaut virtually, a brand new interpretation of mobility through an innovative vision of space. Now, the BMW Group has made a physical model of the vehicle, showcasing its space and sustainable materials.

The Vision Urbanaut brings the user's personal space into the car and opens up various possibilities for them, creating an inner urban oasis. The MINI Vision Urbanaut represents the brand's answer to the needs of future cities and lifestyles.

MINI sees its future self primarily as an enabler of, and a companion for unforgettable times - described as 'MINI moments'. Using this as a source of inspiration, the MINI Urbanaut provides a range of functions, for times when the driver is travelling and others when he is not.

What this means is specific MINI moments created specifically for the Urbanaut, namely the 'Chill', 'Wanderlust' and 'Vibe' settings. The vehicle's fragrance, sound and ambient lighting enrich the baseline mood chosen. 

The Chill moment invites drivers to catch a breath, and pause in the here and now. The car becomes a luxurious retreat, a haven where drivers can relax or work with full concentration. The rear seat bench, known as the Cosy Corner, invites various seating and lying positions. A backlit Loop above it takes on an appearance inspired by a lush green forest.

The Wanderlust MINI moment is activated MINI Vision Urbanaut is being driven or driving with automated driving functions. The interior automatically becomes the ideal place for driving and being driven in, enabling those on board to rediscover the romance of travel. The user interface on the dash also adapts its visuals: Alongside an animation of the route, additional journey information, such as local attractions and arrival time, is displayed for all passengers.

The Vibe moment creates an environment conducive for socialising. With the side doors open and windscreen folded up, a welcoming scene that blurs the boundaries between the outside and inside is created. The central circular instrument becomes a media control centre, with an animation of graphic equalisers moving in time to the music, creating a club-like atmosphere.

The MINI Vision Urbanaut also focuses on sustainability, which is visible in various aspects of the vehicle. MINI's 'Clever Use of Space' design philosophy offers the maximum space in the smallest possible footprint, minimising production resources. Similarly, the vehicle's electric drive system ensures emissions-free mobility.
