Finally. After a decade of updates and a slew of special editions derived from the outgoing generation of MINIs, a new generation MINI has been revealed.
Set to make its global debut at IAA Mobility, the car you're looking at is the new MINI Cooper Electric (petrol-powered versions will soon follow), although this is still the new fifth generation MINI that we've long been waiting for.
It's still recognisably MINI throughout: There's a familiar silhouette with a short bonnet and shorter overhangs, and the large, doe-eye head lights remain.
But that's where the link to MINI of old end design-wise. Up front, the grille has now been given a splash of angularity, and now appears as an octagonal item. Those aforementioned head lights also deliver a horizontal light graphic as standard, although three adjustable light signatures will also be offered.
Look from the flank and you'll notice this MINI Cooper Electric now gets flush door handles, while the wheel arches and side scuttles have been removed. And while we're on the topic of things now gone from the car, this MINI has also abandoned the use of chrome: A touch we saw the firm already adopting in its special edition models including these, or the MINI Strip designed by Paul Smith.
At the rear, this MINI's taillights are now triangular items. Just like the head lights, these can be had with different patterns, although the Union Jack option continues to be available.
The MINI Cooper Electric will be offered in three trim options: 'Classic', 'Exclusive', and 'Sport', with the latter coming with a different front and rear design as well as a high-gloss black front grille frame and logos. 'Sport' trim cars will also be offered with an optional Chili Red roof and red/black bonnet stripes.
Anticipating a new digital age, a 9.4-inch OLED display now features prominently in the cabin of this MINI. The new screen runs the new MINI Operating System 9, which can now display maps and directions in realistic 3D visualisations, offer information on current traffic levels and offer assistance with information of available parking options. The new system will also feature the new AirConsole in-car gaming platform first revealed in the BMW 5 Series.
A MINI Intelligent Personal Assistant that can be activated with the greeting "Hey MINI" or by using the push-to-talk steering wheel button is additionally available for the first time in a MINI.
The new MINI Cooper Electric is being offered with a 181bhp electric motor that develops 290Nm of torque, allowing it to hit 100km/h from a standstill in 7.3 seconds. This MINI Cooper Electric will offer a WLTP range of 305km.
A MINI Cooper Electric SE will also be offered, delivering a total of 215hp and 330Nm of torque (that's more than the 320Nm of torque from the outgoing MINI John Cooper Works 3-Door). This MINI Cooper Electric SE will see to the century sprint in just 6.7 seconds, and will offer a WLTP range of 402km (a sizeable increase over the 232km offered by the outgoing MINI Electric we tested in July of 2021).
First deliveries of this new MINI are set to begin in early 2024 in the U.K.
