MIRT had a lucky break when no APRC points were awarded at the first round of the APRC at Rally de Nouvelle Caledonie, which is also the round that MIRT opted out of. This means that the points count start from zero at Rally Queensland and already, Crocker has a strong lead taking the 1st position, earning him 3 bonus points. Gilmour was not too far behind finishing 4th on her first day in the APRC, just about 2 minutes behind Gaurav Gill from the MRF Tyres team, who is currently in the 3rd position.
"I'm elated and very encouraged by the outcome of Day 1. Overall, this is a good start for the season. Today's results have definitely upped my determination to maintain my lead in Day 2," said Cody Crocker, driver of Motor Image Racing Team.
"Today was a very tough start to the APRC. We had a small mechanical problem which slowed us down, other than the fact that Rhianon and I are still learning to work together. We made very good progress in the day and the team has done a very good job in making the car right for tomorrow," said Emma Gilmour, driver of Motor Image Racing Team. "It's my first race as part of the MIRT and I'm quite pleased with my performance for Day 1. I'm looking forward to improving tomorrow! The car handles fantastic!"
Motor Image Group (MIG), the sole distributor of Subaru cars in Singapore and seven other key markets in Asia, fields two rally cars this year. This year's rally sees the MIRT debut a new MY09 Subaru Impreza WRX STI. One car is driven by APRC defending champion, Australian Cody Crocker, and his co-driver, Ben Atkinson. The other car will seat the first-ever female rally team in APRC history, New Zealander Emma Gilmour and her co-driver, Rhianon Smyth.
"Day 1 was quite challenging for us. This is a new rally leg and we have got new cars with a new second driver / co-driver team, so there were certainly some things we needed to iron out. However, the good news is that we managed to secure good positions and we will definitely push for good results tomorrow," said Mr. Glenn Tan, Team Principal, Motor Image Racing Team.
The MIRT debuts at Rally Queensland, held on 9th and 10th May 2009 in Australia, for this year's APRC season. They will then proceed to compete in the remaining rallies that will be held in New Zealand, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, and finally, China.
