Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd, the maker of Subaru vehicles, has launched the Subaru Exiga, a seven-seater crossover equipped with a 2,000c.c. engine. This model is based on the 2009 Forester platform, and is likely to replace the Subaru Outback sold in overseas markets. The Exiga range slots between the Legacy and Tribeca that are already in production.
The Exiga, which has Fuji Heavy's original "horizontally opposed" engine, offers spacious interiors and large window. The model can accommodate seven adults and has three rows of seats laid out on different levels so that those at the back are higher.
The Exiga will come in 2 variants. The base version will come with normally aspirated DOHC boxer engine with active valve control system and a choice of front or all-wheel drive. The GT version has a turbocharged engine, and will get standard all-wheel drive and a five-speed automatic transmission.
The Exiga is priced at between 1,995,000 yen and 2,782,500 yen. The company aims to sell 2,300 units a month.
The launch of the Exiga is expected to intensify competition in Japan's minivan market as it came after the release of new minivans by Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. in May. Mazda Motor Co. also plans to launch a new model in July.
