NFC-enabled smartphones can now top up your EZ-link cards

A new app by EZ-Link Pte Ltd, allows Singaporeans to use a Near Field Communication (NFC) enabled Android phone to top up their cards. The locally developed app - My EZ-Link Mobile - allows top up services for your EZ-link cards along with viewing card transaction history in the last 30 days and balance. It can also manage up to 10 EZ-link cards and even personalise it.
To develop the app, EZ-Link paired up with Wirecard AG, a global specialist in payment processing and issuing, in the technical development of the application. The app can be currently used with selected Samsung Galaxy, Sony Xperia and LG phones - provided users utilise a NFC SIM card, issued from their respective telecommunications service providers. Top up can be made with either MasterCard or Visa credit and debit cards.
"Using My EZ-Link Mobile service will enable every household to have their own top-up device, where they can enjoy on demand top ups, permitting them to perform cashless payments on public transit and at more than 30,000 acceptance points including taxis, supermarkets and fast food chains islandwide," said CEO of EZ-Link, Nicholas Lee.
Security was also a key concern - albeit without hindering the user experience. In order to validate each transaction, users are required to key in a one-time password sent to them via SMS. Also, users can choose to have their credit card details stored or manually input the data each time they make a transaction.
My EZ-Link Mobile is available for free at the Google Play store. Each top up comes with a convenience fee of $0.30 per transaction, which will be waived for a promotional period of six months from the launch date for MasterCard cardholders.
The service could be expanded to global e-commerce players and local department stores to allow customers to make mobile payments without having to provide their credit card details.
According to The Business Times, developing the app was a challenging task, due to performance consistency issues across different NFC phones and had to work with different antenna locations in the handset to ensure application robustness, cited Mr Lee.
