The vehicle’s battery system was switched on during the crash simulations to test the safety measures of the electrical system, which includes automatic cut-off isolation in the event of an accident, and Nissan said the system worked flawlessly. As for the batteries that are housed in a compartment underneath the floor, they were not affected by the impacts.
"Nissan LEAF proves that EVs can achieve the same safety levels as traditional cars. The standard is now set for the next generation of such cars on the European market," said Euro NCAP secretary general Michiel van Ratingen.
Other results in the latest round of Euro NCAP crash tests saw the new Ford Focus, the Citroen DS4, the Lexus CT200h, the Peugeot 508 and the latest Volvo V60 all receiving the maximum 5-star rating. The Focus was praised for its safety features like Active City Stop and Lane Keeping Aid, while Volvo once again underlined their commitment to safety, with the V60’s ESC, seatbelt reminder and a driver-set speed limitation device all helping it achieve a high score.
