Train operator SMRT will look further into revamping the rail system, such as overhauling the older train fleet, to enhance customer experience.
These plans were announced at a joint briefing with the Land Transport Authority (LTA), close to one year after a Committee of Inquiry (COI) were set up to address the two major train breakdowns in December 2011.
Speaking at the briefing, SMRT Chief Executive, Desmond Kuek, commented, "What we want to do is to take a comprehensive view of the entire system to see how we can improve on system reliability, safety and capacity."
The revamp will include replacing major components of the second generation trains, such as drivetrain systems and air compressors. The interior of these 19 trains will also receive a makeover, which will range from wider seats and non-slip floor mat to new handrails.
Just last week, LTA and SMRT has announced that they will fasten the pace of an extensive overhaul program, which is currently underway, that will replace rail system such as wooden sleepers and power-supplying third rail system.
