Peugeot has announced that it has designed a new petrol engine as the firm continues to tackle the reliability issues that plagued its PureTech 1.2-litre unit.
Simply called the 'Turbo 100', this new engine is said to incorporate 70% new components (by value). These new parts include a turbocharger, injection system, pistons, cylinder block, and most critically, a timing chain - the timing belt reportedly being a frequent failure point of the old PureTech 1.2-litre unit.
This new engine is a three-cylinder unit that displaces 1,199cm3 and offers a maximum output of 99bhp alongside a peak torque of 205Nm from 1,750rpm. It additionally makes use of a variable‑geometry turbocharger, which Peugeot states will make urban driving and overtaking manoeuvres easier in the cars that it is deployed in.
Also present here is a new high-pressure direct injection system and a new valve timing system. This engine will make use of a new Miller cycle with a high compression ratio, improving its thermal efficiency.
Peugeot states that this new engine has spent more than 30,000 hours on test benches, and that prototype vehicles equipped with the engine have already totalled more than three million kilometres, with several vehicles exceeding 200,000 kilometres, attesting to the engine's reliability.
The new Turbo 100 is set to make its way into the Peugeot 208 and Peugeot 2008 come March and May 2026 respectively, and the models - like all within the Peugeot lineup - will benefit from the Peugeot Care programme, offering a warranty of eight years and 160,000km.
