Polestar has published the first Life Cycle Assessment for the Polestar 4. It states that the all-electric SUV coupe will come with the lowest carbon footprint of all its cars to date, at 19.4 tonnes of CO2e at launch.
The Polestar 4 is produced in Geely Holdings' factory in Hangzhou Bay, China which combines green electricity that carries a hydro-power certificate, with photovoltaic electricity from its own roof. Polestar states that the carbon footprint of the Polestar 4 is also brought down thanks to the use of low-carbon aluminium from smelters using hydropower electricity.
Aluminium is said to represent 23% to 24% of the carbon footprint of the car, while steel and iron constitute 20%, and battery modules account for the highest share of the carbon footprint of materials production and refining at 36% to 40%.
The car in its 'Standard range Single motor' variant, comes with a carbon footprint of 19.4tCO2e, while the 'Long range Single motor' version comes with a carbon footprint of 19.9tCO2e, and the 'Long range Dual motor' has s footprint of 21.4tCO2e - quite the remarkable achievement, given that the car comes with a 102kWh battery, as well as the ability to deliver a peak power output of 537bhp. For comparison, the firm announced in June 2023 that its 'Standard range Single motor' variant of the Polestar 2 comes with a carbon footprint of 22.5tCO2e.
