Private school bus drivers embark on safety campaign

Insurance premiums for private buses have doubled in recent years, suggesting the increasing occurence of accidents involving these buses. In response, the Singapore School Transport Association (SSTA) has rolled out a campaign to encourage bus drivers to drive safely.

General Secretary of the General Transport Workers' Union, Mr. Fang Chin Poh, pointed out that unlike public bus drivers, private bus drivers are not trained to handle emergency situations. The union is partnering SSTA in this safety campaign.

At the launch of the campaign yesterday, Chairman of SSTA Wong Ann Lin also noted that insurance premiums for private buses have increased significantly in recent years. He said that the campaign aims to promote safety driving and reverse this trend.

Although details have not been worked out, private bus drivers are likely to receive incentives when they sign up for the courses. Motor insurers NTUC Income and Tenet Sompo are also giving $50 rebate for policy renewal after the driver has attended the course.
