Renault reveals stunning new R17 electric restomod

After presenting us with the 5 E-Tech, Renault has once again dug into its lineup of historic vehicles, this time to bring us a new restomoded classic.
This one's called the R17 electric restomod x Ora Ito, and was developed by Renault's Design team in collaboration with Ora Ito, a designer known for (Renault states), hacking brands with his digital products.
The coupe is said to retain the original monocoque structure of the Renault R17, alongside its doors, windows, seals, and underbody, although its total width has been increased by 170mm for better roadholding, and this body also now sits atop a new carbon fibre chassis.
Up front, the restomoded car also gets new rectangular modules for its head lights (in place of the classic's round items, although these new ones are still yellow, because, you know, it being a French car and all…) while its taillights now take the form of a single strip. Powering this restomoded car is also a new all-electric drivetrain that makes use of a 270bhp motor that powers the rear wheels.
Inside, the new car gets a few retro-futuristic touches including the use of a new central screen alongside four small geometric screens behind the steering wheel, the latter inspired by the dials on the original model. The car’s seats also make use of fine Merino wool and lightweight wool boucle - a touch said to be inspired by the world of interior design.
Here's the catch though: Renault is explicitly stating that this R17 electric restomod x Ora Ito is but a design exercise and does not precede any future series production model. The car will be on display at the Chantilly Arts and Elegant Richard Mille competition from 12 to 15 September 2024, before heading to the Renault stand at the Paris Motor Show from 14 to 20 October 2024.
