Renault has revealed more details of the new 5 Turbo 3E.
Top highlight is the fact that the car is now confirmed to deliver a total of 533bhp, which is enough to see it sprinting from a standstill to 100km/h in under 3.5 seconds.
The Renault 5 Turbo 3E has a longer wheelbase than the new electric Renault 5 and gets an exterior that is more reminiscent of the classic Renault 5
Despite that tremendous power output, the Renault 5 Turbo 3E will remain a compact vehicle, measuring in at 4,080mm long and 2,030mm wide (about as long but a far bit wider than this MINI Aceman, for comparison), allowing the car to sit in what Renault claims is a new 'mini-supercar' category.
Inspiration for the exterior of this 5 Turbo 3E is said to have been drawn from both the classic Renault 5 Turbo and the Turbo 2, so you'll note, for example, that the 5 Turbo 3E gets square head lights at the front, different from those on the new electric Renault 5.
You'll also note that the Renault 5 Turbo 3E gets a more visually aggressive front bumper, while a large outlet rests atop its bonnet, said to be necessary to balance aerodynamic downforce between the front and rear of the car.
The cabin of the Renault 5 Turbo 3E gets two sizeable screens and bucket seats complete with six-point harnesses
The Renault 5 Turbo 3E also gets a host of scoops designed to direct air smoothly across its wheels, while the rear of the car, retains the taillight design from the Renault 5, but these now sit atop a massive rear splitter.
Further differentiating itself from the Renault 5 is the fact that the 5 Turbo 3E is said to sit atop a bespoke platform, tailored for its raised performance. This platform allows the car to house a 70kWh battery that Renault expects will give it a range of more than 400km, while facilitating charging up at up to 350kW, thanks to the use of an 800W architecture.
In the cabin, the Renault 5 Turbo 3E will get bucket seats complete with six-point harnesses, as well as a rally-style vertical handbrake, while a 10.1-inch and a 10.25-inch screen will offer users access to Google services including Google Maps so they can plan their journey and schedule any needed charging sessions along the way.
The Renault 5 Turbo 3E is set to be offered in markets including Europe, the Middle East, Japan and Australia, but only a total of 1,980 examples will be made - in tribute to the year in which the original Renault 5 Turbo was launched.
