Residents in Bukit Timah experience the longest drive to the city

The findings are the result of a six-month study of 15 neighbourhoods between September last year and February this year run by Dutch company TomTom, a firm renowned for its navigational devices.
Motorists who leave for work between 7:00am and 9:00am spend an estimated 35 minutes on clogged roads, almost twice the time it would take, when the traffic is smoother. Clementi and Jurong West followed Bukit Timah as the worst morning commutes, reported The Straits Times. Toa Payoh and Clementi trail behind, for evening peak hour traffic where residents took 32 minutes.
The study also revealed, residents living in the North-East and Eastern suburbs of Sengkang and Pasir Ris experienced the smoothest rides to work. The local paper added, TomTom declined to reveal the exact number of drivers it collected data from, only revealing it sourced "tens of thousands" of navigation units.
The average trip times were recorded during the morning peak period of 7:00am to 9:00am and the evening rush hours of 5:00pm to 7:00pm on weekdays - and were compared with time taken between 1:00am and 5:00am when roads were clearer. The most central point of each neighbourhood was marked as the starting point while the end point was Raffles Place MRT station.
Chris Kearney, TomTom's Vice President for Asia Pacific, believes tied the congestion in Bukit Timah to its residents' affluence. "This is a popular neighbourhood and there is a high density of car ownership among the residents."
In contrast residents in the area blame widespread construction work and a number of schools in the area for the slow moving traffic. PUB is widening a canal while the Land Transport Authority (LTA) is building the Downtown Line Stage 2.
