Six Toyota Hilux cars worth more than $197,000 in total have been seized in a joint operation last Wednesday by Singapore and Malaysian police who believed they were part of a car smuggling operation.
Acting on information received from the Royal Malaysian Police (RMP) through Interpol, officers from the Singapore Police Force launched an operation at the Brani Terminal to intercept two containers en route to Jebel Ali in the United Arab Emirates.
In a statement released yesterday, the Singapore police said it believed that a smuggling syndicate operating in Malaysia was involved in the illegal trading of stolen Malaysian-registered vehicles and that Singapore was being used as a transit point.
The cars had been shipped in two containers from Port Klang in Malaysia to Singapore, where they were unloaded to be shipped again to Jebel Ali in Dubai.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the syndicate falsely declared the contents of the containers to avoid detection. The RMP has arrested several alleged syndicate members in Malaysia in connection with this case.
Commander of Ang Mo Kio Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner Keok Tong San, said cooperation between the authorities in both countries and Interpol proved successful. "Since 2012, we have returned 36 stolen Malaysian-registered vehicles. We will continue with our cross-border cooperation to cripple the syndicates," he added.
