Suzuki has unveiled its first mass-production battery electric vehicle (BEV), the e VITARA. It is based on the concept model eVX, which was showcased at the Auto Expo in India and the Japan Mobility Show in 2023.
The e VITARA features a design with the advanced feel of a BEV and the ruggedness of an SUV, with large tyres and a long wheelbase. Its interior exudes a feeling of "high-tech", with an integrated display including advanced equipment, panels, and centre console.
Its BEV powertrain has an eAxle that combines the motor and inverter, along with lithium iron-phosphate batteries designed for safety and reliability, which delivers a nimble and sharp driving experience.
While a single-speed electric drive transmission comes as standard across the board, the e VITARA offers the choice of a 49kWh (2WD) or a 61kWh (2WD and 4WD) battery, with the dual-motor 4WD variant delivering a maximum output of 135kW (181bhp) and 300Nm of torque.
Speaking of this, the electric four-wheel drive system on the 4WD e VITARA has been dubbed 'ALLGRIP-e', and sees the car getting two independent eAxles at the front and rear. In addition, it includes a Trail mode that allows escaping from rough terrain, providing both off-road capability and powerful performance.
The e VITARA uses a newly developed HEARTECT-e platform made specifically for BEVs, featuring a lightweight structure, high-voltage protection, and a spacious interior due to the short overhangs.
Production of the new BEV will commence at Suzuki Motor Gujarat in India in spring 2025, with sales expected to begin in summer 2025 in countries like Europe, India, and Japan.
