The exercise to replace the starter motor on the Nano had already begun in October, and Tata said that it has already fixed the problem on 50,000 Nano city cars. "Owners of all old Nanos were informed about the exercise, and about 50,000 cars have already been done. There are about 65,000 owners who are yet to visit their dealerships and the company is in continuous contact with them," Tata said in a statement.
The move affects all Nanos built from launch in 2009 up till November 21 this year. Tata introduced a revised version of the Nano in November 2011, which are not affected by the recall as they have a different starter motor.
The recall exercise is the biggest ever in India, and affects just slightly over 115,000 Nano city cars. Tata Motors will replace the starter motor of affected cars, but calls the exercise an "upgrade", as it claims there is no safety hazard associated with the old starter motor.
