Volkswagen pushes into India with Mahindra Group EV-partnership

Volkswagen Group has announced that it will be entering a partnership with India's Mahindra Group for the development of the latter's upcoming electric vehicles.
Specifically, the collaboration will see the German carmaker supplying Mahindra Group with components based on its MEB platform, which was specially built from the ground up for electric vehicles. As per reporting by Reuters, the details of this supply agreement are expected to be finalised by the end of 2022.
Mahindra's XUV300, currently one of its best-sellers Mahindra Group is one of the largest domestic car manufacturers in India, where the market skews heavily towards local marques which enjoy both government incentives, and also produce cheaper, mass-market models.
According to CEO of Volkswagen Group Components, Thomas Schmall, Volkswagen "wants to contribute significantly to the electrification of India" through the upcoming partnership with Mahindra.
Like fellow Indian auto carmaker, Tata, Mahindra is also readying itself for an all-electric future.
The MEB platform is currently already being used on cars like the Volkswagen ID.3 The firm provided a glimpse of its 'Born Electric' vision in February this year - apparently the working name for its EV platform that will supposedly accompany the launch of its first proper EV offensive. A fuller picture is expected during the full reveal in July, although this teaser video suggests that at least three cars are on the cards.
The partnership with Mahindra Group will mark the second time that Volkswagen's MEB platform is being extended to another carmaker in an automotive partnership.
Earlier this year, news also broke that Ford would be producing an electric model for the European market based on the platform, with a planned volume of 1.2 million units over a timeframe of six years.
