"I have a wider emotional range than your boyfriend", is the accompanying caption on a post of this concept car on the BMW Singapore Instagram page.
It's called the BMW i Vision Dee, and we reckon if BMW is willing to risk a little rage baiting to catch your attention, then this must be a car worth seeing for yourself.
Which is exactly what we did on the evening of 26 July 2023, at an exclusive preview of the car held for members of the media at the Mediacorp Campus theatre. The arrival of the concept car here in Singapore marks the first time it has been showcased in South East Asia.
'Dee' stands for Digital Emotional Experience, the 'digital' component being the third sphere of what BMW sees is the future of the group.
The first component, 'Electric', has already arrived in force here, demonstrated by vehicles including the iX, iX3, and the i4 and i7. And the second component, 'Circular', already demonstrated via the BMW i Vision Circular showcased in 2021, a representation of the group's goal to become the most sustainable manufacturer for individual premium mobility.
Whether BMW will become the most digital manufacturer in the years ahead remains to be seen, but this BMW i Vision Dee certainly shows just how far ahead of the competition the marque is.
Giving the i Vision Dee its claimed emotional range are a large pair of 'eyes', courtesy of the use of E-Ink technology (first utilised on this BMW iX Flow) on its closed BMW kidney grille. This tech allows the two surfaces to alternate between black or white, facilitating a host of expressions, including a curious scan of the room when a crowd gathers ahead of the car, or even a cheeky wink as you bid it farewell.
Step closer to the vehicle, and it will project an image of the driver's avatar onto the side window, adding a further personalized touch to the welcome scenario.
Users will be able to choose from between different levels of digital content they want on their head-up display
But the inside of the i Vision Dee is where the digital truly comes to the fore. The minimalist interior places the Mixed Reality Slider at the centre of attention. This slider allows the user to choose between five different levels of digital content he/she wants to see on the head-up display.
This head-up display can project across the entire width of the concept's windscreen, and when the reality slider is pushed to its highest level, the car can even project an augmented-reality so users are practically immersed in their own virtual world. A standard production version of this BMW head-up display will be used in the models of the firm's Neue Klasse models from 2025 onwards.
Interested to see the BMW i Vision Dee yourself? The car is on display at Suntec City Convention Centre Atrium from 27 to 30 July 2023, from 10:00am to 10:00pm daily. Matthias Junghanns, Director Automotive Design, BMW Designworks Shanghai, will also be delivering presentations daily from 27 to 30 July at 12:00pm, 4:00pm, and 8:00pm.
And as an added sweetener to convince all to head down to Suntec, BMW's line of i all-electric vehicles such as the BMW i4, BMW iX3, BMW iX and BMW i7 will be on display for visitors to experience outside the showroom, and test drives for interested customers will also be available on site.
