The late Zhang Huirui was the wife of a prominent National University of Singapore (NUS) Associate Professor, Gong Jiangbin, reported The Straits Times.
The 42-year old woman died on the spot after getting pinned under bus 78 and dragged for five metres. A trail of blood was left along the road, right outside a McDonald's fast food outlet next to Clementi bus interchange. According to The Straits Times, the woman just started to cross the pedestrian crossing when the bus hit her. It was also reported that the lights were in her favour.
An eye witness who was crossing the road in the opposite direction recalled that the victim's lower limbs went under the bus first before her body was dragged along.
The 47-year old Singaporean bus driver was held by the police, and would speak only with his wife who arrived at the scene later. The driver has since been suspended until investigations are completed.
A spokesman for SBS Transit has apologised for the accident, and is committed to render assistance to Madam Zhang's family.
The victim's husband was inconsolable when he reached the site and collapsed in tears. In light of his safety, the Professor had to be escorted by paramedics from the accident scene. Professor Gong teaches at the NUS Faculty of Science and is the recipient of several teaching awards there.
