Avensis is the flagship of the Toyota range in Europe and has been a major factor in building brand awareness across all market segments. Not only was Avens is styled in Europe and developed with the European market in mind; it is assembled in Europe too.
The 2007 Avensis will build on the success of the current model by offering customers greater levels of quality, performance and driving pleasure. The 2007 Avensis features a fully competitive range of diesel engines, including a new 2.0-litre D-4D 125, fresh exterior and interior design, and significant suspension and steering tuning for even better ride and handling.
The 2007 Avensis will go on sale across Europe in June 2006.
More dynamic styling and premium interior
Exterior
The 2007 Avensis has a stronger and more emotional exterior design to give the car a more sporty feel and make it more recognisable on the road. The front bumper styling is all-new, following the consistent design of Toyota core models. It is styled to create a premium image while emphasising the sporty and dynamic nature of the range.
There are strong vertical character lines which flow down from the bonnet and then extend horizontally along the bottom edge of the bumper. These divide the centre and side sections of the front bumper to create a dynamic shape.
The new radiator grille is designed around the double concave theme that gives it a clear Toyota identity and it has a chrome surround to enhance the premium image.
The new headlamp design clearly adds to the sporty nature of the 2007 Avensis with twin cylindrical lamps for high and low beams, aluminium textured reflectors and a smoked finish.
This sporty look is carried through to the rear of the 2007 Avensis with a new combination lamp where the cylindrical portion of the outer lens is clear and other portions are changed to rose-red, creating a high design contrast. The lamp cover adopts a vertically-striped design to emphasise the appearance of depth.
Attention to detail and a more premium feel is created by the introduction of LED turn-lamps mounted within the outer door mirrors. The mirror itself has been enlarged to improve rear vision and safety.
Five new colours are introduced on the 2007 Avensis. These colours are Ash Grey, Brocade Red, Storm Bronze, Fir Green and Pacific Blue
Interior
The 2007 Avensis features a new interior colour and trim, even greater perceived quality and new ergonomics for the navigation system, steering wheel switches and instrument panel.
While the dark grey interior has proved extremely popular with customers, and is retained, a fresh two-tone interior of dark grey and Greige has been created which gives a lighter ambience. This will appeal to customers who like a more modern feel.
At the same time, the interior trim fabrics have been upgraded with a small contrasting pattern to reflect the more modern, premium atmosphere.
The interior trim changes are further emphasised by the new decorative trim to the instrument panel and console which now features a woodgrain effect for contrast with lighter interior colours or a more hi-tech metal grain.
A multi-information display has been added to the combination meter to offer drivers more driving data such as outside temperature and fuel consumption information. The steering-wheel audio controls allow for more comfortable and quick operation.
Dusk and rain sensors will be standard from mid-grade specifications while the standard-fit audio, with turn-by-turn navigation (optional), is also upgraded. Where the optional, full map navigation is installed, the remote control is built-in to the centre console allowing better ergonomics and easier control of the many functions.
A new premium grade trim will be available only with the hi-tech D-4D 180 Clean Power engine.
Unique to the premium grade model to create a distinctive presence on the road will be exclusive 17-inch alloy wheels and a dark grey front grille with chrome inserts. The interior will be equally exclusive with silver metallic stitching on the leather steering wheel and lever boot, metal inserts on the sporty-look steering wheel and a high quality, perforated Alcantara and leather trim.
Fully competitive diesel range
With the launch of the 2007 Avensis, Toyota reveals a fully competitive diesel engine range that will drive forward the company's growth in the European market. A choice of three D-4D diesel engines will be available from the Clean Power range: an all-new 2.0-litre D-4D 125, the 2.2-litre D-4D 150 and, at the top of the range, the state-of-art 2.2-litre D-4D 180.
With these outstanding engines Toyota expects to increase the mix of diesel sales of the Avensis from 44% in 2005 to 54% in 2007. At the same time, the roll-out of the new generation D-4D engines across other models in the line-up will power the growth of Toyota in this important global market.
The brand-new 2.0-litre D-4D 125 is an important development in the evolution of the new generation Toyota diesel engines. Derived from the advanced 2.2-litre D-4D units and sharing much of their technology, it delivers excellent power and fuel economy to satisfy customer demand for refined driving performance.
Thanks to the application of latest generation technology and reduced engine weight, the D-4D 125 will offer customers better performance, lower fuel consumption, low noise levels and reduced emissions.
Installed in the 2007 Avensis, the D-4D 125 will achieve best-in-class performance with highly competitive, low CO2 emissions of 146 gr/km (in combined cycle). The engine develops 93 kW (126 DIN hp) and 300 Nm of torque with the torque output flat from around 2,000rpm to 2,800rpm.
The new D-4D 125 engine will be available in two versions: a D-4D 125 with diesel particulate filter (DPF) will be suitable for countries where incentives are in place for low particulate emissions. Other countries may wish to adopt the D-4D 125 with an oxidation catalytic converter (CCo).
Both engines comply with current Euro IV diesel emission regulations and offer exactly the same output and performance. But the different approaches to emissions control require different fuel injection strategies and different exhaust technology.
The 2007 Avensis will be available with six speed manual transmission as standard on all dieselengine models.

The refined driving pleasure of the 2007 Avensis is further emphasised by the comprehensive range of petrol engines and optional transmissions which are now available with the full model line-up.
All the petrol engines offer advanced technology to increase driving performance, reduce fuel consumption and harmful emissions. At the same time, they offer levels of refinement that are unmatched in the upper-medium segment.
For 2007 the Avensis will be available in Europe with a choice of four petrol engines: 1.6 VVT-i, 1.8 VVT-i, 2.0 direct injection and, in selected markets, 2.4 direct injection. There will also be a choice of five-speed manual, four speed automatic or five speed automatic (2.4-litre only) gearboxes with the petrol engines.
Even greater driving pleasure
Based on customers feedback, Toyota's engineers have reassessed every aspect of the Avensis to improve its performance in road noise, ride comfort, steering response and high speed stability. As a result, refinement and driving pleasure are brought to new levels with a series of technical enhancements to the suspension, steering system and vehicle aerodynamics.
In the McPherson strut front suspension the anti-roll bar has been increased in diameter to reduce body roll under cornering and achieve a flatter ride. The shock absorber damping force has also been retuned.
There has also been extensive retuning of the double wishbone rear suspension to improve its dynamic performance. Bushes in the suspension arms and the suspension carrier have been softened to achieve more compliance and the shock absorber damping force has also been retuned. At the same time, the rear anti-roll bar has been reduced in diameter in order to allow slightly better turn in to corners.
These suspensions changes improve all aspects of driving performance, including reduced road noise, improved ride comfort, steering feel and cornering and braking stability.
Working with the suspension retuning, there are several changes in the steering system to improve steering response. These include significantly stiffer steering house mount bushes, reinforcement of steering support member and stiffer joints within the steering main shaft.
Excellent safety package
The Toyota Avensis is one of the safest upper-medium segment cars on the road in Europe today with a five star EuroNCAP rating. The Avensis was one of the first upper-medium cars to achieve this high rating and the 34 points scored still places it among class leaders.
The superior safety of the Toyota Avensis comes in part from its strong, rigid body structure, which provides both a safety cell for the occupants and a platform for the advanced suspension package.
The 2007 Avensis is available with nine airbags, among these an SRS knee airbag for the driver. The driver and front-seat passenger's airbags have dual-stage inflators which adjust the inflation pressure depending on the severity of the impact. At the same time, the driver's airbag features a seat-position sensor, which checks the seat slide position.
The 2007 Avensis employs the latest-generation ABS system and increases its effectiveness with EBD (Electronic Brake-force Distribution) and BA (Brake Assist). Highly advanced Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRC) are standard across the 2007 Avensis range in Europe (not 1.6-litre petrol in selected markets).
Low cost of ownership
The Avensis already benefits from low repair and maintenance costs and has the highest residual value in the segment across key European markets.
The 2007 Avensis builds on the model's already excellent record of low repair costs; relevantin achieving one of the best classifications in the segment in European markets whereinsurance costs are based on class rating.
Much work has gone into extending service intervals and reducing maintenance times. The cumulative maintenance time after 100,000km for the petrol engines and (2.2) D-4D engines is the lowest in the segment at 4.2 hours.
