Toyota's latest addition to its Land Cruiser line up of off-road capable SUVs was originally unveiled to the world on 20 October 2025.
Planned for a domestic launch in Japan in the mid of 2026, the new Land Cruiser FJ was brought to the 2025 Japan Mobility Show, where it was showcased to the media and the public for the first time.
Toyota's Land Cruiser line up has always consisted of large or heavy-duty SUV and trucks. Until the introduction of the compact Land Cruiser FJ, the Land Cruiser line up consists of the large, flagship 300 Series, the Heavy-Duty 70 Series and the core 250 Series Land Cruiser.
While its size might be a departure from the Land Cruisers that many are familiar with, this new car encapsulates the essence of the long-running model well.
On the exterior, the Land Cruiser FJ's short wheelbase is clear to see - it is in fact 270mm shorter than that of the 250 Series'. However, its rugged design composed of angular shapes with chamfered edges is clearly inspired by the past Land Cruisers and the FJ Cruiser.
The short wheelbase and body-on-frame design allows the Land Cruiser FJ to be a capable and agile off-roader
And it goes deeper than looks - built upon Toyota's IMV platform, the Land Cruiser FJ is engineered to be a capable off-roader. With a body-on-frame design, a large amount of ground clearance, and wheel articulation (on-par with the 70 Series) is achieved. The shorter wheelbase also results in a tight turning radius of 5.5m, allowing increased manoeuvrability and agility. Powered by a 2.7-litre engine, 161bhp and 246Nm of torque is sent to all four wheels on the Land Cruiser FJ.
Extensive off-road testing ensures the reliability, durability and off-road performance that the Land Cruiser line up is known for.
Inside, the Land Cruiser FJ has a cabin that emphasises utility without sacrificing aesthetics. The result is a rugged-looking interior that is still packed with amenities such as a large central infotainment display, along with a digital driver display.
The presence of physical climate control buttons further adds to the ease of usage. Additionally, a decidedly low beltline is employed to improve visibility, which is especially important on rougher terrains.
In a true off-roader fashion, the Land Cruiser FJ is also engineered segmented and removable corner bumpers to allow efficient and easy repair while allowing increased customisability. On the topic of customisability, Toyota is planning the gradual rollout of customisation options, and we already got a sneak peek of an alternate front-end with round head lights at the mobility show.
Although the Land Cruiser FJ is destined for production and expected to be available in Japan sometime next year, there are no plans to introduce the model in Singapore just yet.
