Toyota has announced that it will assemble a new, three-row battery electric SUV at its plant in Kentucky, U.S.A come 2025.
The move will make the yet-to-be revealed vehicle the first battery-electric vehicle from the firm to be assembled in the U.S.A. The move, Toyota states, demonstrates its belief in electric vehicles and its commitment to design, engineer and produce vehicles in and for the U.S.A.
The Kentucky plant will be supplied with batteries made in Toyota's North Carolina plant, which will see an additional $2.84 billion (USD$2.1 billion) investment to support Toyota's drive toward carbon neutrality. The North Carolina facility will serve as Toyota's hub for developing and producing lithium-ion batteries needed for its expanding portfolio of electrified vehicles. Production at the North Carolina plant is slated to begin in 2025 with six battery production lines, four for hybrid electric vehicles and two for BEVs.
