With 190,000 units delivered to customers since its launch in 2021, the Volkswagen ID.4 is the brand's most popular purely electric model to date. Volkswagen plans to ramp up the ID.4s assembly in the Chattanooga plant to 7,000 vehicles per month in the later part of this year with a longer goal to further increase output through 2023.
The American-made ID.4 will be available in rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive 82kWh battery form. There will also be a more affordable 62kWh battery version with rear-wheel drive going into production later in 2022.
The Chattanooga factory was the result of a $1.1 billion dollar investment from the German car maker into electrifying it. This investment included dedicated facilities for vehicle and battery pack assembly.
Materials and components in the ID.4 are assembled in 11 U.S.A states, from steel in Alabama and Ohio, to interior parts in Indiana and South Carolina. The EV battery will be supplied by SK Innovation in Georgia.
The launch of Volkswagen's ID.4 has seen suppliers investing $3.7 billion throughout the North American continent, including the battery partnership with SK Innovation. As a result, more than 3,000 U.S.A jobs have been created due to the suppliers' investments
As for the Volkswagen Chattanooga factory, more than 4,000 people have been employed. To meet high customer demand for the ID.4 and Atlas SUV, the brand is still actively hiring more than 1,000 new production team members through 2022.
These are all part of the grand Volkswagen North American plan that has seen the company commit more than $9.8 billion over the next five years, boosting product portfolios, regional R&D and manufacturing capabilities.
