Since the original Polo's debut in 1975, and with more than 20 million vehicles sold in six generations, Volkswagen has announced that it will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the small compact car.
Initially based on the Audi 50, the Polo went into series production in Wolfsburg, incorporating core virtues such as agility, affordable mobility, and good handling, which have continued the success story since.
The Polo II, introduced in 1981, brought along more space and comfort alongside a newer engine. In 1987, the limited special series Polo Coupe GT G40 saw the debut of the scroll-type supercharger. The Polo III in 1994 saw it become one of the first vehicles in its class to have innovative safety features like airbags. 1998 saw the Polo offered for the first time as a GTI. The 2002 Polo Mk4 came with a new level of comfort and safety, in addition to increased size.
Continuing on, the Polo V – introduced in 2009 – saw the introduction of a host of digital innovations, as well as an impressive performance in motorsport. The Polo Mk6 came along in 2017, based on the modular transverse matrix (MQB), and was followed with a facelift in 2021.
For its 50th anniversary, the Polo will be accompanied by the Volkswagen Classic and will be presenting historic models from its own collection, kicking things off with the Bremen Classic Motorshow, which runs from 31 January 2025 to 2 February 2025.
