After announcing that it would establish a tech hub here in Singapore, Volvo has now announced that it will be establishing a mobility innovation centre for emerging technologies in Torslanda, Sweden.
The new Mobility Innovation Destination Torslanda will serve as a test bed for automotive, and is described by Volvo as being part of its electrification journey as it works to advance its next generation of premium electric cars. It further states that on top of being a recommitment to its hometown of nearly one hundred years, the location of the new centre will also allow it to test, validate and deploy its future innovations in a city-like environment.
The new centre will get what is described as "wood hybrid" buildings, designed to reduce their carbon footprint by up to 15% compared to a traditional frame of steel and concrete, and construction of the new centre is planned to start in the second quarter of 2024, with the first building to be finished by 2026, in time for Volvo Car's 100-year anniversary in 2027.
On top of this new mobility innovation centre, Volvo has announced that it will be expanding its presence in Torslanda with a new battery plant that comes as part of a joint venture with Northvolt. The battery plant is set to commence operations in 2025.
